So, Dan and I have to give talks in church on the 23rd.
I HATE hate talking in front of people
I can write papers and make things sound okay, but actually getting up in front of hundreds of people and reading it?
No thank you.
Because of my debilitating fear, I am having a hard time getting started.
Any thoughts from my friends out there as to how to make a great talk?
How do you start when preparing a talk?
What kinds of things do you look for?
In case you're interested, the topic is humility and gratitude.
Also, in case you were wondering, Dan is great at giving talks.
Seriously exceptional.
So I have to get up there and blunder around for a couple of minutes
and then he takes up the rest of the time with something super spiritual and profound
which makes everyone wonder, "what does he see in her?".
I know I'm just being dramatic, but seriously.
I hate giving talks.

  1. when we had to give talks Derek let me in on his secret to giving talks... the who, what, when, where, why, how thing from like elementary school. It helps get to the basics and also really helped with planning. It kinda gave me something to go on. that's probably why they teach it in the first place:-). It helped me a lot!! I also have to write down EVERY word I'm going to say or it will be 10 minutes of Um's and but's.
I envy people like Dan and Derek that can go in with a couple a bullet points and give an amazing and inspirational talk.
    I hope this helps some.

  2. I HATE giving talks too! I get stage fright. I cannot handle it. I'm sorry you have to go through that. I feel for you. Good luck.

  3. That's how I felt the last time we gave talks. It helps me to write it out word for word the way I would write about it on my blog. That way it comes out not quite as awkward, and I'm not left up there going "um, yeah" "ya know" and other garbage like that ;-)

  4. I just start crying over silly things, partly because of the spirit and partly because I'm just waaaaayyy too emotional and whenever I feel anything too much I start crying. So that includes nervousness. haha, and I'm a Relief Society teacher. Madness!

That helpful comment being typed...Sam told me he just tries to follow the example of the pro's-like general conference talks. Maybe that's obvious but that's helped me. Some from the scriptures, a personal story or two, some from past or current prophets? That's what I do. :S Good luck!

  5. Because you are a good writer, you have it in you to be a good speaker. I like Ariel's suggestions about content, then just write it in your own wonderful style and read it out pretty much word for word. Wish I could be there to hear you both!

  6. I always structure speeches like this:
    Funny Introduction
    Roadmap of speech

    Point 1
    helpful evidence

    Point 2
    Helpful evidence

    Point 3
    Helpful Evidence

Practical application/summarize what I just talked about

You've got this! You'll do great!
